About Mastectomy Bras & Breast Forms

A mastectomy bra is one that features fabric pockets inside the bra cups. These fabric pockets exist to hold a breast form in place after a mastectomy/lumpectomy surgery has been performed. Browse our selection of mastectomy bras

To the untrained eye, a mastectomy bra will look like any other bra you may have worn before your breast surgery, in fact, they are designed that way. But hidden beneath the seams are a variety of clever features that make these bras unique. Mastectomy bras come in a range of styles because everyone’s needs are different.

It is best to be fitted by a professional and get help in understanding what you are trying to create. The professionals will be able to help guide you and provide a sense of comfort level when moving through this process. Mastectomy bras include added features such as pockets, softer material and also added support through the straps and cup area. They are made to be more comfortable.

Yes, Medicare will typically cover these products.

Yes! All mastectomy/partial mastectomy related products are tax-exempt and considered tax-deductible as a medical expense on your income tax.

Medicare typically covers 4-6 bras annually or as many indicated/prescribed by your MD.

In addition, Medicare typically covers 1 SILICONE breast form per affected side every 2 years or 1 FOAM form per affected side every 6 months.

After a mastectomy, breast conserving or even reconstruction, you might choose to wear a breast form or shaper to help feel like yourself again. Your goal when being fitted for a breast form is to create a natural silhouette so that you feel comfortable and confident. Breast forms aren’t just cosmetic, there are important medical reasons to wear them. By compensating for the weight of the real breast, a properly fitting breast form helps prevent problems like Lymphedema, bad posture or shoulder and neck problems.

Most insurance companies will cover costs for the breast form. Patients should get a prescription from their doctor stating their diagnosis and the need for the breast form and bras.

Breast forms can be made from several different types of materials, such as silicone, foam, or fiberfill to create something that has a similar weight and feel to a natural breast.

Some breast forms adhere directly to the chest area, while others fit into a special bra pocket that helps hold the breast form in place.

To be certain you get the best breast form fit for your needs, it is recommended to consult with a certified mastectomy fitter in your area.  It is suggested to wait until 4-6 weeks after your surgery to be fitted for a breast form. This will allow incisions and swelling to diminish and ensure the most accurate measurements. To speak with one of our professional certified fitters, please call 262-754-3939. We are happy to help!
